Bamboo Fences (new for 2009)

We have added a line of bamboo fences for the 2009 building season. We have become an authorized installer of Cali Bamboo products, who are the leading supplier of quality bamboo materials in the United States. Although cedar is a very durable and renewable resource, bamboo grows at a far greater rate, making it more renewable. As more and more “green products” have been developed, bamboo has been coming into greater use in the construction business in the United States and throughout the world.
The majority of our bamboo offerings are framed solid designs, where we incorporate premium bamboo material into one of our custom cedar frames. Bamboo material, while not contributing to the structural rigidity of the frame, is extremely durable to the elements (wind, sun, rain, etc). Anywhere we incorporate a “solid” treatment in our designs, bamboo can be substituted.
The options available for bamboo infill material are:
Natural Color – ¾” or 1” diameter canes
Natural Black – 1” diameter canes
Stained Mahogany – 1” diameter canes
The material can be up to 8 feet tall – and the canes are all tied together using internal wires – to create a bamboo fabric of whole canes. The canes are all pre-dried and straightened – and have a very uniform diameter.
Pricing Information – As a substitute for cedar infill in a solid fence, bamboo is a premium material, starting at about a $4 per foot premium to $15 per foot premium at 6 feet tall, depending on the color and diameter of the canes selected. Since the bamboo fabric itself does not contribute to the rigidity of the design, more cedar structure is required, which is a slight contributor to the premium price. As you can see in the photo GALLERY, the look produced can be very unique and attractive – as well as highly durable.
A less costly approach with bamboo fabric is also possible as an upgrade to an existing chainlink fence. In this case there is no cedar frame – and the bamboo material is attached directly to the existing fence.
This approach can create a unique privacy screen that can start as low as $15 a foot.
Picket Fences

Picket fences are produced in two fence categories – Basic Installs and Custom Installs. The Basic Installs are pre-fabricated in pine, pressure-treated pine or cedar – with typical panels 8 feet long.
Local market pricing is typically in the $15 to $20 a foot range. Custom Cedar Fences cedar gothic picket is less than $20 a foot.
Custom installs can be anything you want, but we typically make them with panels 6 feet long.
Our custom designs incorporate the “centered runner” concept (explained in greater detail in the Fence Categories page, as well as all our other unique standard features. The result is an extremely durable product. Our decorator series incorporates a top rail design, which has quite a different look from what most people would imagine when envisioning a picket fence. Our custom cedar pickets range from $30 to $65 a foot, depending on the options selected.
Solid Fences

Solid fences are also produced in two fence categories – Basic Installs and Custom Installs. The Basic Installs are pre-fabricated in pine, pressure treated pine or cedar – with typical panels 8 feet long. Local market pricing is typically in the $15 to $30 per foot range. Custom Cedar Fences has two cedar offerings in the $25 per foot range.
Custom installs start with a basic stockade. Our version of this design eliminates well over half of the static offset post loading normally found with this type of one-sided fence. All of our other solid designs essentially eliminate static post side loading and fully incorporate all of our unique standard features. The range of custom solid 2-Sided fences includes: Trimmed Solid, Framed Solid over Solid, Framed Shadowbox over Solid, Framed Lattices (several) over Solid and Framed Mission over Solid. Local market pricing for fences in this category, without our unique standard features, is typically $25 to $75 per foot. Custom Cedar Fences cedar offerings in this category run from $36 to $72 per foot. Custom pressure treated options start from $29 per foot.
Shadowbox Fences

Shadowbox fences have the added advantage of airflow through the fence, while still providing privacy. This has two benefits: lowering dynamic wind loads and providing greater ventilation, particularly for tender plants growing near the corners of the lot.
Shadowbox fences are also produced in two fence categories – Basic Installs and Custom Installs. The Basic Installs are pre-fabricated in pressure treated pine or cedar – with typical panels 8 feet long. Local market pricing is typically in the $15 to $30 per foot range. Custom Cedar Fences has a few offerings in the $20 to $25 per foot range.
All of the custom offerings are fully centered 2-sided designs, totally eliminating static side-loading and fully incorporate all of our unique standard features. All of the designs have the option to change conventional board spacing and thus provide greater levels of privacy. Many of the pre-fabs and custom designs by others have 5.5” wide boards with a 5” gap between boards. The gap is covered on the backside by another 5.5” wide board. Viewing these fences “straight on”, you can’t see through them, but at nearly every other angle, things become quite visible. The standard gap spacing on a Custom Cedar Fences shadowbox is 3.5”, with options for 2.5” and 1.5”.

Lattice Fences and Privacy Screens

In our experience, the primary uses for lattice fences in the Southeast Michigan area are for relatively short privacy blinds and to provide a visual dress-up to things like central air conditioning units. We have produced entire fences in the custom category using standard lattice. Our primary focus is on the use of Custom English Lattice in the premium line, where we are the only local company who hand-fabricates lattice panels.
Lattice Fences are produced in all 3 fence categories, basic installs, custom installs and premium installs. Custom Cedar Fences does not currently participate in the basic installs category for Lattice Fences. If you should find a lattice fence you like at Home Depot, Lowes or another supplier, we would be happy to provide a quote for installation.
Custom installs use adaptations of commercially available cedar lattice panels, most often with criss-crossing boards at 45 degrees. Because of the wide range of possibilities of how standard lattice can be used, stating a market range would be almost meaningless. The version at the top of the accompanying GALLERY was produced for $50 a foot in 2003.
Custom English Lattice is hand-fabricated with a vertical and horizontal pattern (90 degrees). The boards are 1” wide and can be spaced 1” to 6” apart to go from 25% see through to over 95% see through. Fasteners are used at every board intersection, so the 1” x 1” pattern has nearly 1300 fasteners per panel! The panels are a hefty 1.2” thick. The visual impression produced is equally as appropriate for a formal look or an oriental look.
In recent years, 1” x 3” and 1” x 2” Custom English Lattice panels have become a very popular option as a topper panel in all of our custom cedar fence lines. The beauty of English Lattice is captured at a fraction of the cost of creating the entire fence in lattice. Lattice panels in this category start at about $10 a foot over commercially available heavy duty 45 degree lattice.
Full 6 foot tall fence panels in English Lattice fall into the premium installs category. Projects of this sort usually have their total length less than 20 feet. At 20 feet long, prices range from $1600 to $3500.
